Blood and Obedience: Onimasa (1982)

It’s no secret: I unabashedly love Gosha and adore my beloved Nakadai aka the Greatest Actor Alive. They are a match made in heaven, Gosha’s artful brutality combined with Nakadai’s dark charisma always works for me. Onimasa is more than just another yakuza film and might be their best collaboration.     Onimasa: The Japanese Godfather aka The Life of Kiryuin Hanako aka Kiryuin Hanako No Shogai : The decades long tale of Boss 'Onimasa' Masagoro and his adopted daughter, Matsue as their lives see massive changes in Japanese society and politics. Masagoro is not the man he thinks he is while Matsue tries to find herself within the world she was forced into. It covers 1917-1940, the lifespan of Kiryuin Hanako, Matsue's younger sister and Masagoro's biological daughter.   You can go back and find a whole series on the 4 decade career of Hideo Gosha (The Line Between Sleaze and Prestige -  Part 1 , Part 2 ,  Part 3 ,  Part 4 ). Konichiwa! Agoo! Mihofnima! Hallo!

I'll introduce myself a bit. I'm Spencer. I like Africa, birds, and cinema. I really like Japanese cinema in particular. As of now, I'm still not sure what it is about their films that I connect with so strongly but I've always been drawn to this region of cinema for some reason. When it comes my favorites of this gigantic world of cinema, the 70s exploitation era and the 40s/50s studio scene (Toho, Shochiko, and to a much lesser extent Nikkatsu) are my extra, extra sweet spots. If you're wondering, "Why write about cult and exploitation?" The answer is simple, because I want to. There isn't that much writing out there focused solely on it (plus it gives me an excuse to watch even more). Also, I already host a podcast on the filmography of Akira Kurosawa and his contemporaries, High and Low: A Kurosawa Podcast - http://highandlowpod.podbean.com/, with Joel from Please Don't Send Me Into Outer Space - https://pdsmiospod.podbean.com/. My goal is to explore the world of Japanese cult cinema from all eras as much as I humanly can.

Rica 1

Rica 2: Lonely Wanderer

Rica 3: Juvenile's Lullaby

The first set of reviews will be a trilogy of Toei Girl Gang films...Rica 1, Rica 2: Lonely Wanderer, Rica 3: Juvenile's Lullaby, and followed up by a piece on the series as a whole. I plan on doing this for film series like Female Prisoner Scorpion or Terrifying Girls' High School (hopefully, if it ever gets a release stateside). In addition to reviews of film series and stand alone films, I'll on occasion do pieces on actors, directors, and even studios.

If you want to watch the Rica Trilogy, it is on DVD in a 3 pack. It's well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/Rica-Trilogy-Rika-Aoki/dp/B002W981OY/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1510542996&sr=1-1&keywords=rica+trilogy
